Network Remediation & Wireless Overhaul in South Gate, CA

Connectivity Restoration for an Existing Medical Facility

Project Overview:

This project involved diagnosing and resolving severe network and wireless connectivity issues at an existing medical office building in South Gate, CA. The facility experienced unreliable WiFi throughout the building, forcing staff to hardwire both desktop PCs and laptops just to maintain a stable internet connection.

Complicating matters, the building’s structure consisted primarily of brick and concrete, with the attic space divided by a 16-inch concrete wall — significantly restricting wireless signal propagation. Additionally, previous cabling work had been improperly executed, including the use of damaged fiber optic cabling for a short 50-foot run.

Our objective was to redesign, rewire, and reconfigure the network infrastructure to deliver stable wired connectivity and full-building wireless coverage suitable for medical operations.

Project Goals:

  • Diagnose and resolve unreliable WiFi and network performance issues.
  • Replace improperly installed and damaged cabling with structured CAT6.
  • Reconfigure the network for stability, performance, and scalability.
  • Overcome structural signal barriers to deliver consistent wireless coverage.
  • Retrofit the existing gate access system for smart-enabled operation.

Project Milestones:

Infrastructure Assessment & Issue Identification:

  • Conducted a full network audit to identify performance bottlenecks.
  • Discovered severely damaged fiber optic cabling used unnecessarily for a short-distance run (~50 feet).
  • Evaluated signal interference caused by brick walls and a 16” concrete attic divider.
  • Mapped coverage gaps contributing to unreliable WiFi performance.

Structured Cabling Replacement:

  • Removed damaged fiber optic cabling and replaced it with properly terminated CAT6.
  • Re-wired critical network runs to meet structured cabling best practices.
  • Tested and certified cable runs to ensure stable data throughput.
  • Implemented proper labeling and cable management for maintainability.

Network Reconfiguration:

  • Rebuilt and optimized network configuration, including firewall and switching adjustments.
  • Streamlined IP addressing and DHCP allocation.
  • Implemented proper segmentation for medical office operations.
  • Eliminated unnecessary complexity introduced by prior configuration.

Wireless Coverage Redesign:

  • Engineered a wireless solution accounting for heavy concrete and brick construction.
  • Installed discreet access points within attic spaces to optimize signal distribution.
  • Positioned APs strategically on both sides of the concrete divider to prevent signal blockage.
  • Verified full-building coverage through post-installation signal testing.
  • Conducted roaming and reliability tests to ensure consistent connectivity throughout the facility.

Smart Gate Access Retrofit:

  • Upgraded the existing gate access system for smart-enabled use.
  • Integrated secure remote access capabilities for existing gate access system.
  • Tested entry/exit functionality and ensured reliable operation.

Project Outcome:

The medical facility now benefits from:

  • Stable, high-performance wired network infrastructure.
  • Full wireless coverage throughout the building, including previously problematic areas.
  • Elimination of the need for staff to hardwire laptops for reliable connectivity.
  • A properly structured CAT6 cabling system replacing damaged and misapplied fiber.
  • Smart-enabled gate access for improved convenience and security.

The office now operates on a reliable and scalable network foundation that supports daily medical operations without disruption.

Lessons Learned:

  • Building construction materials significantly impact wireless performance and must be accounted for in design.
  • Overengineering (such as unnecessary fiber runs) can introduce avoidable complications.
  • Proper cabling standards and termination practices are critical to long-term stability.
  • Hidden or attic-mounted APs can provide effective coverage in structurally challenging environments.

Next Steps:

  • Implement routine network health monitoring.
  • Explore managed WiFi analytics for proactive troubleshooting.
  • Evaluate redundant internet connectivity options for business continuity.
  • Consider upgrading endpoint security and access monitoring solutions.

Acknowledgments:

We extend our appreciation to the medical office staff and stakeholders for their patience and collaboration throughout this remediation and upgrade process.
