Security & Network Hardening for CMMC Compliance in Hawthorne, CA

Infrastructure Upgrade & Physical Security Modernization

Project Overview:

This project focused on upgrading and hardening a client’s IT and physical security infrastructure in support of CMMC (Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification) compliance requirements. The existing environment included consumer-grade surveillance equipment and limited access control measures that did not align with compliance standards.
Our team implemented enterprise-level network security, replaced surveillance systems, installed access control for critical areas, and reorganized the server rack to support secure and scalable operations. The result was a significantly improved security posture aligned with compliance-driven operational standards.

Project Goals:

  • Upgrade network infrastructure to support CMMC compliance requirements.
  • Replace consumer-grade surveillance equipment with enterprise-level systems.
  • Implement secure access control for sensitive areas.
  • Reconfigure and secure server rack infrastructure.
  • Strengthen both cybersecurity and physical security measures.
  • Deliver a scalable foundation for ongoing compliance initiatives.

Project Milestones:

Network Security Reconfiguration:

  • Replaced and reconfigured core networking equipment using Fortinet security solutions.
  • Implemented advanced firewall policies, segmentation, and traffic monitoring.
  • Hardened network configurations to align with compliance-driven best practices.
  • Ensured secure remote access and encrypted communications.

Surveillance System Upgrade:

  • Removed existing Ring surveillance cameras (interior and exterior).
  • Installed and configured a professional-grade surveillance system.
  • Repositioned cameras to improve coverage, monitoring capability, and perimeter visibility.
  • Integrated centralized recording and management for improved oversight.
  • Verified proper retention and access controls consistent with compliance objectives.

Access Control Implementation:

  • Installed access control at the server room and main front entrance (double doors).
  • Deployed magnetic locks (maglocks) at the primary entry point for secure access management.
  • Configured credential-based entry for authorized personnel only.
  • Tested fail-safe and secure access functionality to ensure life safety compliance.

Server Rack Reconfiguration:

  • Reorganized and optimized the existing server rack layout.
  • Improved cable management for airflow and maintainability.
  • Secured critical hardware components to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Ensured rack configuration aligned with structured security standards.

Security System Deployment:

  • Installed and configured a new integrated security system to unify monitoring and access management.
  • Verified system functionality across all secured areas.
  • Conducted testing to ensure operational reliability.

Additional Enhancements (Out of Scope Support):

  • Upgraded the thermostat head unit to an Ecobee smart thermostat to enable remote monitoring and management capabilities.
  • Ensured secure network integration for smart device deployment.

Project Outcome:

The Hawthorne facility now benefits from:

  • Enterprise-grade network security powered by Fortinet.
  • A professional surveillance system replacing consumer-level devices.
  • Controlled and monitored access to sensitive areas, including the server room.
  • Hardened infrastructure aligned with CMMC-focused security standards.
  • Improved visibility, accountability, and operational control.

The organization now operates with a strengthened cybersecurity and physical security posture designed to support compliance-driven operations.

Lessons Learned:

  • Compliance environments require both digital and physical security alignment.
  • Consumer-grade surveillance systems are insufficient for regulated environments.
  • Proper network segmentation is foundational for CMMC readiness.
  • Securing server rooms and primary entry points significantly enhances overall risk mitigation.
  • Structured rack organization supports both security and long-term scalability.

Next Steps:

  • Conduct periodic security audits and configuration reviews.
  • Implement centralized logging and monitoring for compliance reporting.
  • Evaluate multi-factor authentication integration for access control.
  • Develop documented policies to support ongoing CMMC certification efforts.

Acknowledgments:

We extend our appreciation to the client’s leadership and compliance teams for their collaboration throughout this security upgrade initiative. Their proactive approach to strengthening infrastructure and achieving compliance readiness contributed significantly to the project’s success.
