Here’s how to avoid that.
Why open-plan offices break Wi-Fi
Wireless access points are usually specified by coverage area. That’s the wrong metric for a modern Irvine office.
Three things work against you:
Density, not distance. In an open-plan floor, one access point might technically cover the whole space — and then choke, because sixty devices are all trying to use it simultaneously. Access points have client limits and shared bandwidth. Coverage isn’t capacity.
Glass. Glass conference rooms and partitions are everywhere in Irvine’s newer buildings. Glass reflects and scatters 5GHz and 6GHz signal in ways that create dead spots in places that look wide open.
Interference between your own access points. Put too many on the same channel too close together and they interfere with each other. This is why “just add more” isn’t a plan either.
What good looks like: a wireless design based on a floor plan, with access points placed for capacity and channels planned to avoid overlap. For a dense open-plan Irvine office, that’s often one access point per 1,000 to 1,500 square feet — meaningfully more than the one-per-2,500 rule that works in a walled office.
Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 — worth it?
Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6GHz band. That band is clean — far less congested than 2.4 and 5GHz — which matters enormously in a dense office building where every tenant has their own network.
Wi-Fi 7 builds on that with higher throughput and lower latency.
The catch: 6GHz has shorter range and less wall penetration. You need more access points, not fewer. And they need Cat6a cabling and higher-wattage PoE to run properly.
Recommendation for Irvine: if you’re cabling a new space, run Cat6a and buy PoE+ or PoE++ switches. Even if you deploy Wi-Fi 6 access points now, you won’t have to re-cable when you upgrade. The incremental cost during a new install is small; retrofitting is not.

The landlord factor
